Founding of Latin Union

15 May 1954

The Latin Union was an international organisation created by the Madrid Convention to promote and protect the shared heritage of the Romance-language peoples and to encourage cooperation among them. Its members included France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Romania, together with a number of countries in Latin America and Africa. It had its seat in Paris and worked on the development of the Romance languages, terminology, translation and cultural exchange, and in the use of these languages in international organisations. After years of financial difficulties, as members failed to pay their contributions, the organisation was dissolved.
