The Count of Monte Cristo is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, written with the help of his collaborator Auguste Maquet and first published as a serial in a Paris newspaper. It tells the story of Edmond Dantes, a young sailor from Marseille who is falsely accused of treason by jealous enemies and imprisoned without trial in the Chateau d'If. In prison he meets the Abbe Faria, who educates him and tells him of a hidden treasure. After escaping, Dantes reinvents himself as the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo and takes revenge on those who betrayed him. A tale of justice, vengeance and mercy, it became one of the most popular adventure novels of all time.
